He would incorporate his sister death into his art, creating an incredibly disturbing series of works entitled The Sick Child from 1885 to 1926.
They are his attempt at grappling with the pain of death. Other paintings deal more directly with death, such as his Dance of Life (1900) and Ashes (1894).
